Tennessee orthopedic surgeon shot, killed by patient in exam room

Benjamin Mauck, MD, has been identified as the physician shot and killed by a patient at Campbell Clinic July 11 in Collierville, Tenn.

According to a statement posted July 11 by the clinic on its website, Dr. Mauck was killed in a "single shooter event" inside the Collierville clinic. In response, the organization closed all of its four clinics July 12 and will "communicate the reopening of all facilities at a later time."

Dr. Mauck first joined the Campbell Clinic staff in 2012, according to his bio on the organization's website. He specialized in elbow and hand and wrist surgery and completed his residency at UT-Campbell Clinic in Memphis.

"Our priorities remain Faith, Family and Patient Care," the statement said. "At this time, we ask for your prayers for the entire Campbell Clinic family, as well as for the privacy of Dr. Mauck’s family."

The suspect in the incident, Larry Pickens, was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated assault, according to a July 12 update from the Collierville Police Department.
