Physicians scramble to employment: 5 numbers to know

As inflation has soared and accessing economies of scale becomes more difficult, physicians are flocking to employed models. 

Here are five numbers on employed physicians to know:

108,700: The number of physicians who left private practice for employment from 2019 to 2021, according to a report from Avalere. 

74%: The percentage of physicians who were employed by hospitals, health systems or corporate entities by the end of 2021, according to Avalere. 

57%: The percentage of employed physicians who are satisfied or very satisfied with their income, according to Medscape's "Employed Physicians Report 2023.

56 percent: The percentage of employed physicians who said what they like most about their job is that they do not have to run a business, according to the Medscape report.

70,000: The number of physicians employed by Optum, the country's largest employer of physicians.
