The numbers scaring physicians

Here are five numbers that may be troubling to physicians:

1. Nearly one-third of academic physicians said they plan to leave their institutions in the short term, according to a study in JAMA Network Open

2. Between 2021 and 2022, 40% of physicians polled in a survey from the American Medical Association said they had interest in leaving their current organization within two years.

3. One-quarter of medical students in the U.S. are considering quitting their studies, a figure that compares to 12% worldwide, according to a report by Elsevier Health.

4. About 49% of physicians report feeling burned out, according to Medscape’s 2024 “Physician Burnout and Depression Report.”

5. Sixty percent of employed physicians were required to sign a noncompete agreement when starting their jobs, according to a survey from NORC at the University of Chicago.
