U of Louisville chief medical officer calls for action on gun violence

University of Louisville (Ky.) Health Chief Medical Officer Jason Smith, MD, PhD, has joined the call for stricter regulations on firearms, according to an April 12 report from the Lexington Herald Leader.

UofL Health treated multiple victims of the April 10 shooting at Old National Bank in downtown Louisville. Four of the people injured were still being treated at the hospital as of April 11, when Dr. Smith spoke at a press conference to provide updates on the situation.

"I'll be honest, caring for three shooting victims plus the other that came in is not an infrequent day for us," Dr. Smith said. "We barely had to adjust our operating schedule to deal with (it). That's how frequent we are having to deal with gun violence in our community."

"To everyone who helps make public policy, I would simply ask you to do something, because doing nothing, which is what we've been doing, is not working," he added.
