Physician pay in the best states to live

Physicians in Massachusetts, the best state to live in according to personal finance site WalletHub, make an average annual wage of $223,200.

In a report released Aug. 14, WalletHub determined the best and worst states to live in. The site compared the 50 states across five dimensions: affordability, economy, education and health, quality of life, and safety. Read more about the methodology here.

This physician compensation information comes from May 2022 data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. It excludes anesthesiologists, cardiologists, dermatologists, emergency medicine physicians, family medicine physicians, general internal medicine physicians, neurologists, obstetricians and gynecologists, and pathologists. 

Here is the average annual wage for physicians in the 10 best states to live in:

1. Massachusetts: $223,200

2. New Jersey: N/A

3. New Hampshire: $255,060

4. New York: $245,510

5. Wyoming: This wage is equal to or greater than $115.00 per hour or $239,200 per year.

6. Florida: $254,660

7. Virginia: $191,100

8. Idaho: $292,160

9. Wisconsin: N/A

10. Minnesota: $305,150
