Female physicians' top expenses

Mortgage on their primary residence was the leading expense female physicians reported paying down in Medscape's 2023 "Female Physician Wealth and Debt Report."

The report surveyed 10,011 female physicians across more than 29 specialties.

Here are the top expenses female physicians are facing:

  1. Mortgage on primary residence: 63% of female physicians
  2. Car loan: 31%
  3. Personal college or medical school loans: 27%
  4. Credit card debt: 27%
  5. College tuition for children: 18%
  6. Medical expenses for self or loved one: 18%
  7. Child care: 15%
  8. Mortgage on second home: 14%
  9. Private school tuition for children: 14%
  10. Car lease: 13%
  11. Spouse or significant other's college, medical school or graduate loans: 8%
  12. Business loan: 6%
  13. Graduate school tuition for children: 4%
  14. Alimony: 1%
  15. Other: 5%
  16. None: 12%
