Strikes, unions and contracts: 13 workforce updates in 1 month

Here are 13 updates on unionization efforts and other labor organizing among clinicians at hospitals and health systems in July, as reported by Becker’s: 

1. Members of the Massachusetts Nurses Association reached a tentative labor contract with Baystate Health covering nurses at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, Mass. 

2. More than 300 nurses at 10 SSM Health Dean Medical Group outpatient clinics in Dane County, Wis., voted to join SEIU Wisconsin. 

4. Members of the Massachusetts Nurses Association authorized a potential open-ended strike at Boston-based Brigham and Women’s Hospital Sept. 25, leaving the door open for what the union said would be the largest such walkout in state history. 

5. Members of SEIU District 1199 went on strike Sept. 23 at Cleveland Clinic Lutheran Hospital in Cleveland.

6. Minneapolis-based Allina Health and Doctors Council-SEIU reached a tentative agreement on a first union contract for physicians at Allina Health Mercy Hospital’s Unity and Mercy campuses in the Minneapolis area. 

7. Members of the National Nurses Organizing Committee, an affiliate of National Nurses United, at Ascension St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore ratified their first labor contract. 

8. Members of SEIU District 1199 went on strike Sept. 23 at Cleveland Clinic Lutheran Hospital in Cleveland. 

9. A union election scheduled for Sept. 17 at Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, Ill., was suspended, the hospital confirmed to Becker’s. No new date has been set. The National Labor Relations Board’s Region 13 office in Chicago issued an order Sept. 14 in the case, which is listed on the agency’s docket as blocked. Registered nurses at the hospital petitioned for the election Aug. 24, and the unit covers about 275 nurses. 

10. Nurses and clinicians from Somerville, Mass.-based Mass General Brigham who are part of the Massachusetts Nurses Association rallied outside the health system’s World Medical Innovation Forum Sept. 22-23. 

11. Members of the Michigan Nurses Association canceled a three-day strike that was set to begin Sept. 21 at MyMichigan Medical Center Alma after reaching an agreement in principle with the system.

12. A nurses strike at Henry Ford Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc, Mich., surpassed the one-year mark as negotiations between the hospital and Teamsters Local 332 continue. 

13. Nurses and healthcare workers at four hospitals operated by Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare hospitals held one-day strikes Sept. 3, California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee, an affiliate of National Nurses United, confirmed to Becker’s.
