Jacksonville (Fla.) Orthopaedic Institute is set to lay off more than 300 employees and close six clinics following its recent buyout by Baptist Health.
Here are five things to know:
1. A group of JOI physicians has signed an agreement to repurchase stock that JOI originally sold to Jacksonville-based Baptist Health in 2011. As part of this transition back to independent operation, JOI is undergoing a major restructuring effort, which includes the closure of clinics and staff layoffs.
2. According to WARN filings with the state, 306 employees are set to be laid off across eight JOI locations between May 30 and July 13. Affected roles include physicians, radiology technologists, medical secretaries, patient account representatives, appointment schedulers and medical assistants.
3. A spokesperson from Baptist told Becker’s in a statement that “these decisions were not made lightly, and JOI is committed to helping all impacted employees understand their benefits and providing resources for career continuity to ensure a smooth transition.”
4. Two former JOI surgeons, hand and upper-extremity specialist Jennifer Madden, MD, and sports medicine specialist Richard Snyder, MD, have already landed at Jacksonville-based Southeast Orthopedic Specialists, according to an April 2 news release. SOS is currently in the process of signing additional JOI physicians onto the team, according to a statement from SOS’ management services organization partner, Healthcare Outcomes Performance Co.
6. Baptist Health told CBS affiliate WJAX it will retain five of JOI’s 12 rehabilitation centers but has not yet disclosed which locations will remain open. JOI has also not confirmed which six rehab clinics will be shuttered.
