Why do physicians want to be leaders?

A new McKinsey & Co. survey of 296 physicians found that among 258 physician leaders who are not currently CEOs, 58% are interested in stepping into the CEO role.

The survey identified several key motivators driving physicians in the U.S. to pursue leadership positions:

  • Broader impact on patient care: 51%
  • Greater influence on healthcare innovation and transformation: 42%
  • Opportunities for personal and professional growth: 42%
  • More decision-making power and autonomy: 26%
  • Improved compensation and financial success: 24%
  • Expanded responsibility over budgets: 15%
