Oregon ophthalmologist elected to national academy of engineering

David Huang, MD, PhD, has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering for co-inventing optical coherence tomography.

Dr. Huang first received recognition for co-inventing OPT in 1991 while studying at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. The technology is used to diagnose degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma in an estimated 30 million imaging procedures annually.

Dr. Huang joined Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland in 2010, according to a Feb. 13 report from the university. He currently serves as the Wold Family Endowed Chair in Ophthalmic Imaging and director of research of the OHSU Casey Eye Institute.

Dr. Huang specializes in cornea and refractive surgery and teaches as a professor of ophthalmology and biomedical engineering. He also leads the OHSU Center for Ophthalmic Optics and Lasers.
