Wise, Va.-based The Health Wagon’s president and CEO, Teresa Tyson, DNP, has been named Rural Health Practitioner of the Year by the National Rural Health Association, according to a news release shared with Becker’s.
Dr. Tyson, a family nurse practitioner with more than 30 years of service in southwest Virginia, received the honor at the NRHA Annual Rural Health Conference in New Orleans last May. Notably, Paula Hill-Collins, DNP, Health Wagon’s vice president and clinical director, won the same award in 2019.
Under Dr. Tyson’s leadership, The Health Wagon — a nurse practitioner-managed nonprofit clinic — expanded from basic mobile care into a fully integrated model spanning primary care, behavioral health, chronic disease management, dental and vision services, pharmacy, telehealth, diagnostics, and specialty care.
Her accomplishments include launching Move Mountains Medical Mission, which Health Wagons said surpassed 100,000 patient encounters, and partnering with Flirtey on the first drone medication delivery in the U.S., which has been approved by the Federal Aviation Administration.
“This recognition reflects the dedication of our entire Health Wagon team and our mission to ensure that every individual — regardless of where they live — has access to high-quality, compassionate care,” Dr. Tyson said.
