Georgia state senator joins Georgia Department of Community Health as chief medical officer

Dean Burke, MD, has resigned from his position as a Georgia state senator to step in as the chief medical officer for the state’s department of community health, the agency announced Dec. 22. Dr. Burke represented the state’s 11th district.

In this role, Dr. Burke will be responsible for overseeing the state’s health performance and quality reporting efforts within the Medicaid and PeachCare for Kids — a program for children in uninsured, low-income families — populations.

Dr. Burke has nearly 30 years of experience practicing obstetrics and gynecology in Georgia. He has previously served as the chief medical officer for Memorial Hospital and Manor in Bainbridge, Ga., and as chair of the Stratus Healthcare governing board.
