Eighty-six percent of residents who do not feel fairly compensated said it's because their compensation does not reflect their work hours, according to Medscape's "Resident Salary & Debt Report 2023."
The report included 1,000 respondents across more than 29 specialties. Of those surveyed, 76 percent said they do not feel fairly compensated.
Here is why residents said they are dissatisfied with their income:
Compensation doesn't reflect work hours — 86 percent
Compensation not comparable to other medical staff ( e.g., physician assistants, nurses) — 84 percent
Compensation doesn't reflect required skill level — 76 percent
Compensation doesn't meet cost of living — 64 percent
Inadequate benefits coverage — 27 percent
Other — 6 percent
