The American Medical Association, alongside more than 90 national medical specialty societies and other physician organizations, sent a joint letter to Congress Sept. 15 urging the extension of the enhanced advance premium tax credits.

According to a Sept. 19 AMA news release, these tax credits have assisted more than 24 million Americans afford health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplaces in 2025, particularly older patients, small business owners and those in rural areas.

The tax credits are set to expire at the end of 2025, which the groups claim could have “severe” consequences. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that 4.2 million people could lose their health insurance and many more would face significant increases to their premiums.

Even patients not receiving the tax credits would be impacted as the expiration would “destabilize the marketplaces and drive overall premiums higher.”
