Los Angeles-based physician Violetta Mailyan, MD, has been indicted for allegedly submitting more than $45 million in false Medicare claims for Botox injections, according to a Dec. 18 news release from the Justice Department.
What happened?
- Dr. Mailyan, who owned and operated Healthy Way Medical Center, allegedly billed Medicare for injections that were medically unnecessary and never administered.
- Prosecutors said the claims included dates when Ms. Mailyan or the patients were traveling internationally, when patients were incarcerated, and when the clinic was closed.
- She is charged with nine counts of wire fraud and three counts of obstructing a criminal investigation. If convicted, she faces up to 20 years in prison per wire fraud count and up to five years per obstruction count.
