10 physician group lawsuits in 2025

Here are 10 lawsuits so far in 2025 that involve either physician group practices or physician advocacy groups, as reported by Becker’s:

1.  On Aug. 21, the Society of General Internal Medicine and the North American Primary Care Research group filed a lawsuit against U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. over the stoppage of research grants administered by HHS’ Agency for  Healthcare Research and Quality. The lawsuit centers around the downsizing and staff firings within AHRQ, a part of President Donald Trump’s plan to restructure HHS. 

2. UnitedHealthcare filed a lawsuit against Radiology Partners and its Arizona affiliate Aug. 8, alleging the companies have been gaming the No Surprises Act’s independent dispute resolution process and “funneling millions into the pockets of its private equity owners.”

3. In July, The American Academy of Pediatrics filed a lawsuit in July against Mr. Kennedy, arguing that his anti-vaccine views violated longstanding norms governing U.S. immunization policy. 

4. Eden-Prairie, Minn.-based Dillman Clinic & Lab, a physician-owned clinic, and another small health care provider in the state filed for a preliminary injunction in federal court against UnitedHealth Group over the healthcare giant’s emergency loan repayment demands

5. Williston, Vt.-based Evergreen Family Health filed a lawsuit against the Bank of Burlington, claiming the financial institution failed to prevent a fraudster from stealing $270,000 from the practice’s checking account.

6. Fort Wayne (Ind.) Orthopedics LLC sued an orthopedic surgeon alleging he provided care at a competing group after he resigned, claiming that he breached a noncompete clause of his employment contract.

7. Doctors for America filed a lawsuit against the Office of Personnel Management and other federal health agencies for removing webpages from healthcare websites. The February lawsuit also targeted the CDC, FDA and HHS for removing a “broad range of health-related data and other information used every day” by health professionals and researchers. The complaint specifically cites the Administrative Procedure Act and the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995 as precedents for the lawsuit. 

8. In early February, physicians with GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ+ Equality, an LGBTQ+ physician association, joined seven families with transgender or nonbinary children, the American Associate of Physicians for Human Rights and PFLAG, a national LGBTQ+ group, as plaintiffs in a lawsuit over President Donald Trump’s executive order to stop federal support for gender-affirming healthcare for transgender people under age 19. 

9. Three TeamHealth-affiliated physician groups filed a lawsuit against Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, alleging that the insurer breached its contract by improperly reducing reimbursements for emergency services. 

10. A patient Oregon filed a $4 million lawsuit against Providence Health & Services and Oregon Anesthesiology Group, both located in the Portland area, after contracting the life-threatening hepatitis-C virus. In July 2024, Renton, Wash.-based Providence alerted 2,200 patients of possible exposure to hepatitis B and C and HIV after the health system’s infection control practices may not have been followed by an anesthesiologist. The physician was employed by Oregon Anesthesiology Group.
