New Jersey physician files age discrimination lawsuit

An orthopedic surgeon has filed a lawsuit against his former employer, claiming age discrimination, wrongful discharge and breach of contract, according to an Oct. 19 report from nj.com.

Here are five things to know:

  1. Michael Meese, MD, a 67-year-old orthopedic surgeon, filed the lawsuit against the Cliffside Park Board of Education, claiming age discrimination, wrongful discharge and breach of contract.
  2. He served as medical director for more than 25 years before being replaced this year. 
  3. Dr. Meese entered annually into contracts with the board to provide treatment of sports-related injuries for high school students.
  4. Jonathan Dominguez, MD, a 36-year-old family practice physician, replaced Dr. Meese as medical director earlier this year. 
  5. Dr. Meese was paid $15,000 last year for his services. Dr. Dominguez is being paid $24,000 annually to serve as the new medical director. The lawsuit seeks a jury trial and monetary damages.

The board did not immediately respond to Becker’s request for comment.
