New National Cancer Institute director takes helm

W. Kimryn Rathmell, MD, PhD, is the new director of the National Cancer Institute.

Dr. Rathmell, a kidney cancer expert and leader in cancer research and patient care, was selected by President Joe Biden to succeed Monica Bertagnolli, MD, who left the NCI to become the National Institutes of Health director in November, according to a Dec. 18 NCI news release.

Most recently, Dr. Rathmell served as chair of the department of medicine and physician-in-chief at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.
