Physicians make up a small but persistent share of American elected officials, and the 2026 midterms are testing how durable that presence is.
Below are the physicians currently serving in the Senate, House and as governor, followed by a closing look at the newest members of the group and the one departure so far.
1. John Barrasso, MD. U.S. Senator, R-Wyo. An orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Barrasso has represented Wyoming in the Senate since 2007 and won a fourth term in November 2024, a seat that isn’t up again until 2030. He holds the chamber’s No. 2 Republican leadership post as Senate majority whip.
2. Roger Marshall, MD. U.S. Senator, R-Kan. An OB-GYN before he was elected to the Senate in 2020, Dr. Marshall is on the ballot this cycle; Kansas holds its primary Aug. 4 and general election Nov. 3.
3. Rand Paul, MD. U.S. Senator, R-Ky. An ophthalmologist, Dr. Paul was reelected in 2022 and isn’t up again until 2028.
4. Ami Bera, MD. U.S. Representative, D-Calif. (6th District). An internal medicine physician, Dr. Bera has represented the Sacramento-area district since 2013 and was a founding member of the Congressional Doctors Caucus launched by Democratic physicians in March 2025.
5. Scott DesJarlais, MD. U.S. Representative, R-Tenn. (4th District). A family medicine physician, Dr. DesJarlais has represented southern Tennessee since 2011.
6. Neal Dunn, MD. U.S. Representative, R-Fla. (2nd District). A urologist, Dr. Dunn has represented the Florida Panhandle since 2017.
7. Andy Harris, MD. U.S. Representative, R-Md. (1st District). An anesthesiologist, Dr. Harris chairs the hardline House Freedom Caucus, to which he was reelected this Congress.
8. Ronny Jackson, MD. U.S. Representative, R-Texas (13th District). An emergency medicine physician, Dr. Jackson served as White House physician under Presidents Obama and Trump before winning his Texas seat in 2020.
9. John Joyce, MD. U.S. Representative, R-Pa. (13th District). A dermatologist, Dr. Joyce has represented south-central Pennsylvania since 2019.
10. Rich McCormick, MD. U.S. Representative, R-Ga. (7th District). An emergency medicine physician, Dr. McCormick has represented Atlanta’s northern suburbs since 2023.
11. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, MD. U.S. Representative, R-Iowa (1st District). An ophthalmologist, Dr. Miller-Meeks has represented southeast Iowa since 2021.
12. Greg Murphy, MD. U.S. Representative, R-N.C. (3rd District). A urologist, Dr. Murphy chairs the GOP Doctors Caucus.
13. Raul Ruiz, MD. U.S. Representative, D-Calif. (35th District). An emergency medicine physician, Dr. Ruiz has represented the Coachella Valley since 2013 and was a founding member of the Congressional Doctors Caucus.
14. Kim Schrier, MD. U.S. Representative, D-Wash. (8th District). A pediatrician, Dr. Schrier became the first female physician elected to Congress in 2018 and helped launch the Congressional Doctors Caucus.
15. Josh Green, MD. Governor of Hawaii, a Democrat. An emergency physician, Dr. Green is completing his first term and is on the ballot this November after winning Hawaii’s Democratic gubernatorial primary.
Recent electees, exits
Five physicians won their first federal elections in November 2024 and were sworn into the U.S. House in January 2025. A sixth physician’s tenure is ending: Sen. Cassidy becomes the first elected incumbent senator to lose renomination since 2012.
16. Herb Conaway, MD. U.S. Representative, D-N.J. (3rd District). An internal medicine physician and former longtime New Jersey state assemblyman, Dr. Conaway won his U.S. House seat in November 2024 and joined the Congressional Doctors Caucus at its launch.
17. Maxine Dexter, MD. U.S. Representative, D-Ore. (3rd District). A pulmonary and critical care physician, Dr. Dexter won her Portland-area seat in November 2024 and joined the Congressional Doctors Caucus at its launch.
18. Mike Kennedy, MD. U.S. Representative, R-Utah (3rd District). A family medicine physician and former Utah state senator, Dr. Kennedy won his U.S. House seat in November 2024.
19. Kelly Morrison, MD. U.S. Representative, D-Minn. (3rd District). An OB-GYN, Dr. Morrison won her Minneapolis-area seat in November 2024 and joined the Congressional Doctors Caucus at its launch.
20. Bob Onder, MD. U.S. Representative, R-Mo. (3rd District). An allergist and former Missouri state senator, Onder won his U.S. House seat in November 2024.
21. Bill Cassidy, MD. U.S. Senator, R-La. A gastroenterologist who chairs the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, Dr. Cassidy lost his Republican primary on May 16, 2026, to Trump-backed challenger Julia Letlow, who advanced to a runoff with fellow Republican John Fleming. The defeat will end Dr. Cassidy’s Senate tenure in January 2027.
