Why physicians are looking to retire

Burnout was the leading reason behind physicians wanting to retire from medicine, according to Medscape’s 2023 “Physicians Eye Retirement Report.”

The report polled 1,017 physicians across more than 29 specialties from May 4 to June 15.

Here are the driving factors behind physicians wanting to retire by their target age:

  1. Burnout from medicine: 74% of physicians
  2. Expect to have enough saved to live comfortably: 68%
  3. Would have time to pursue personal passions: 61%
  4. Family deserves more time: 45%
  5. Personal health concerns: 13%
  6. Other: 3%
