Job burnout is the leading factor fueling depression among physicians, according to Medscape’s 2024 “Physician Burnout and Depression Report.”

The report surveyed 9,226 physicians across over 29 specialties between July 5 and Oct. 9.

Here are the factors physicians identified in the report as affecting their depression (Note: Respondents could vote for more than one option):

  • Job burnout: 72%
  • Physician’s responsibilities: 44%
  • Finances: 31%
  • World events: 31%
  • Family issues: 24%
  • Insecurity: 19%
  • Health: 14%
  • Romantic relationships: 14%
  • Personality: 14%
  • Other: 7%
