What physicians want to do in retirement, in and out of medicine

Travel is a main retirement goal among physicians, according to Medscape's 2023 "Physicians Eye Retirement Report."

The report polled 1,017 physicians across more than 29 specialties from May 4 to June 15.

Here are the retirement goals for physicians outside of medicine:

1. Traveling: 84% of physicians
2. Leisure activities: 78%
3. Dining out: 28%
4. Charitable contributions: 27%
5. Financial gifting to family: 27%
6. Investments: 21%
7. Second home: 17%
8. Other: 7%

Here are the goals for physicians looking to stay current on medicine in retirement:

1. Tracking new medical developments: 55%
2. Reading medical journals: 47%
3. Participating in medical societies: 25%
