Percentage of female physicians per specialty

Orthopedics has the least amount of female physicians when compared to other specialties with just 10 percent of women making up the orthopedic workforce, according to Medscape's "Physician Compensation Report 2023."

The report, released April 14, includes responses from 10,011 physicians in more than 29 specialties.

Here is the percentage of female physicians in 29 specialties, according to Medscape:

Ob/Gyn: 62 percent

Pediatrics: 59 percent

Diabetes and endocrinology: 54 percent

Family medicine: 49 percent

Infectious diseases: 45 percent

Psychiatry: 44 percent

Dermatology: 43 percent 

Public health and preventive medicine: 42 percent

Rheumatology: 42 percent

Pathology: 41 percent

Internal medicine: 40 percent

Physical medicine and rehabilitation: 39 percent

Allergy and immunology: 36 percent

Ophthalmology: 34 percent

 Nephrology: 34 percent

Critical care: 31 percent

Neurology: 30 percent

Gastroenterology: 27 percent

Oncology: 27 percent

Pulmonary medicine: 26 percent

Emergency medicine: 26 percent

Anesthesiology: 26 percent

Otolaryngology: 22 percent

Surgery, general: 22 percent

Radiology: 19 percent

Plastic surgery: 19 percent

Cardiology: 17 percent

Urology: 13 percent

Orthopedics: 10 percent
