Value-based payment adoption reduces burnout in family physicians: Study

Family physicians who have adopted value-based payment models reported less burnout, according to a recent study from the American Academy of Family Physicians.

The study, which was conducted alongside EHR company Elation Health, interviewed 10 primary care physicians from 10 participant practices that were primarily small with one to four physicians. The study also included responses from two physicians from larger practices of 25 to 50 clinicians and one from a corporate VBP-focused organization.

The study found that physician burnout decreased once practices passed 75% financial investment in VBP models. The study also found that burnout was shown to increase for practices that had adopted VBP arrangements but did not reach the 75% threshold.
