The state of the physician workforce

Here are five numbers physicians should know on the state of the workforce based on data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

  1. The overall employment for physicians and surgeons is expected to grow by 3% between 2022 and 2032.
  2. 24,600 job openings are projected to be added between 2022 and 2032 for physicians and surgeons.
  3. Psychiatry is the physician specialty that is expected to see the biggest growth between 2022 and 2032, at 7%.
  4. Pediatricians and pediatric surgeons are projected to grow by only 1% between 2022 and 2032.
  5. The average median wage for physicians and surgeons was $229,300 in May 2022.
