The most burnt-out physician specialties

Emergency medicine is the most burnt-out physician specialty, according to Medscape's 2024 "Physician Burnout and Depression Report."

The report surveyed 9,226 physicians across over 29 specialties, with 61% of respondents being male and 39% of respondents being female.

Here are the physician specialties ranked by burnout rates:

1. Emergency medicine: 63%

T-2. OB-GYN: 53%

T-2. Oncology: 53%

T-4. Pediatrics: 51%

T-4. Family medicine: 51%

T-4. Radiology: 51%

T-7. Pulmonary medicine: 50%

T-7. Anesthesiology: 50%

T-7. Gastroenterology: 50%

T-7. Internal medicine: 50%

11. Urology: 49%

12. Cardiology: 47%

T-13. Nephrology: 46%

T-13. Physical medicine and rehabilitation: 46%

T-13. Dermatology: 46%

T-16. Critical care: 45%

T-16. General surgery: 45%

T-18. Diabetes and endocrinology: 44%

T-18. Neurology: 44%

T-18. Orthopedics: 44%

21. Otolaryngology: 43%

22. Pathology: 41%

T-23. Psychiatry: 39%
