The health system layoffs physicians need to know 

Healthcare companies were the industry with the third-most job cuts in 2023, according to a Jan. 4 report from Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

Here are four health systems laying off employees since Dec. 5:

1. Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente terminated 153 California employees, 79 administrative positions and 74 IT positions. 

2. West Burlington-based Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center announced plans to lay off 67 employees from to locations, which will take effect on Feb. 23,

3. Lewiston, Maine-based St. Mary’s Health System, an affiliate of Covenant Health, has laid off 31 employees. 

4. West Reading, Pa.-based Tower Health laid off 30 employees Dec. 5  in an effort to streamline operations
