The best metropolitan areas for physicians

Minneapolis-St. Paul ranks as the top metro for physicians across all five specialties analyzed in a new report from Marit Health, which examined physician pay, malpractice insurance premiums, housing costs, commute times, family friendliness and health and fitness scores across major U.S. metro areas.

Dallas-Fort Worth and Portland, Ore. traded the second and third spots depending on the specialty. Dallas generally outranked Portland on salaries and housing affordability but scored lower on commutes and health and fitness.

A surprise contender was Richmond, Va.., which ranked especially well for pediatrics and radiology. Short commutes, affordable housing and reasonable insurance premiums put Richmond on par with larger metros like Seattle, Chicago and Washington, D.C.
