According to Medscape’s “Physicians Eye Retirement 2023 Report,” of the physicians who plan to retire, 28% plan to do so in their mid to late 60s, while 25% aim to retire in their 70s.
Seventy-four percent of physicians choose their target retirement age due to burnout from medicine. This was the top reason why physicians choose their retirement age, followed by expecting to have enough saved to live comfortably and having time to pursue personal passions.
Physicians aren’t hung up on leaving the field; 67% of physicians are extremely or very confident that retirement life will be rewarding. In retirement, 84% of physicians plan to spend their time and money traveling.
