Physicians and family life: 7 numbers to know

Here are seven numbers to know on physicians and their marriage and family life, according to Medscape‘s 2024 “Physician Lifestyle and Happiness Report:”

  1. Half of female physicians said they feel “very conflicted” or “conflicted” as parents due to work demands, while 32% of male physicians reported the same.
  2. Seventy-eight percent of physicians said they spend time with family and friends to maintain their happiness and mental health.
  3. Younger physicians were more likely to prioritize personal and family time, calling it “very important,” than physicians aged 45 and older, at 78% and 67%, respectively.
  4. Eighty-five percent of male physicians reported being married, compared to 73% of female physicians.
  5. Female physicians were more likely to report being divorced than their male counterparts, at 7% and 5% respectively.
  6. Eighty-two percent of physicians described their marriages as “very good” or “good.”
  7. One in 5 physicians said their spouse or partner was also a physician.
