Physician burnout drops below 50% for first time since 2020

The physician burnout rate dropped below 50% for the first time in four years, according to a survey by the American Medical Association.

The AMA Organizational Biopsy collected over 12,400 responses from physicians across 31 states and 81 health systems between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 2023. 

In 2023, 48.2% of physicians in the survey reported experiencing at least one symptom of burnout, down from 53% in 2022. This is also down from a 2021 peak of 62.8%.
