On March 17, 1,200 resident physicians and fellows at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City reached their first tentative labor agreement with the health system.

The 1,200 residents, fellows and house staff are represented by the Committee of Interns and Residents, a local of the Service Employees International Union. The proposed contract includes an 18% increase in pay, a $25,000 annual child-care allowance and a $3,000 housing stipend.

The deal also includes expanded health benefits and “critical due process protections,” aimed at improving physicians’ well-being and “ability to provide high-quality patient care for the Bronx.”

Resident physicians voted to re-establish a union at Montefiore in 2023, and both sides have been in negotiations for roughly two years. The tentative deal is pending ratification by union members.

At the Becker's 23rd Annual Spine, Orthopedic and Pain Management-Driven ASC + The Future of Spine Conference, taking place June 18–20 in Chicago, spine surgeons, orthopedic leaders and ASC executives will come together to explore minimally invasive techniques, ASC growth strategies and innovations shaping the future of outpatient spine care.
