How economic pressures are affecting physicians’ career plans

Thirty percent of physicians are likely to pursue side gigs to offset economic pressures such as inflation and Medicare payment cuts, according to Doximity’s “2023 Physician Compensation Report.”

The report, released March 23, consists of 31,000 self-reported physician compensation surveys that were completed between January and December 2022. The survey regarding the effects of economic factors on physicians’ career plans consisted of more than 2,000 physicians. Read more about the methodology here

Here’s how physicians responded to the survey question, “How are you most likely to adjust for economic factors like inflation and Medicare fee schedule cuts?” according to the report:

Pursue a side gig: 33 percent

No adjustment: 27 percent

Pursue salary increase through current employer: 15 percent

Increase patient caseload/work hours: 14 percent

Pursue higher salary through employer change: 11 percent
