9 union moves shaking up healthcare

Here are nine updates on unionization efforts at healthcare organizations since Nov. 1, 2025:

1. Members of the United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Professionals concluded their three-day strike at San Diego-based Sharp HealthCare Nov. 29. 

2. Registered nurses at Oakland-based University of California ratified a new four-year contract covering 25,000 nurses at 19 facilities. Voting on the agreement — which includes provisions aimed at improving retention and patient safety — ended Nov. 22

3. Advanced practice providers at Portland, Ore.-based Legacy Health are set to begin an open-ended strike Dec. 2 at Legacy Emanuel and Legacy Good Samaritan medical center.The ONA represents about 140 adult specialty APPs, including nurse practitioners, physician associates, certified nurse midwives and clinical nurse specialists

4. After being postponed indefinitely due to the government shutdown, a union vote for nurses at four UnityPoint Health hospitals in central Iowa has been rescheduled. The National Labor Relations Board, which oversees the vote, has scheduled the election for Dec. 7-9.

5. Members of the Massachusetts Nurses Association at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton reached a tentative labor agreement with management. The agreement covers about 400 nurses at the hospital, which is part of Somerville, Mass.-based Mass General Brigham.

6. University of Massachusetts resident physicians, interns and fellows employed by Worcester-based UMass Chan Medical School ratified a new union contract.

7. Members of the Maine State Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee planned to begin a two-day strike Nov. 18 at Houlton Regional Hospital.

8. Henry Ford Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc, Mich., declared an impasse in negotiations with Teamsters Local 332, which represents registered nurses who have been on strike since Labor Day, and said it will begin unilaterally implementing proposals offered during contract talks — including wage increases. The hospital announced Nov. 5 that union members will see salary increases of up to 8.6% as part of the implementation. 

9. Nurses at University Medical Center New Orleans, represented by National Nurses United, planned to begin a three-day strike Nov. 11 — the hospital’s fifth since October 2024.
