73% of physicians currently experiencing burnout: 7 report takeaways

Burnout continues to be a cause for concern across healthcare systems, with 73 percent of physicians currently experiencing burnout, according to a report from Vital WorkLife.

The "2022 Well-Being in Healthcare" report also found that 93 percent of physicians reported facing burnout at some point in their career.

One potential cause of burnout is the growing demand for physicians as the turnover rate continues to increase, with primary care and rural patients suffering from the largest gaps.

The report pulled from a variety of data sources, including a 2022 survey conducted by Vital WorkLife on peer coaching.

Here are seven other takeaways from the report:

  1. The demand for physicians is expected to lead to a shortage of between 54,100 and 139,000 physicians by 2033.
  2. Despite the high rate of burnout among physicians, 66 percent of those surveyed reported their organization does not prioritize physician well-being.
  3. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death among physicians, with more than 50 percent of those surveyed reporting they know another physician who has considered, attempted or died by suicide.
  4. Eighty percent of physicians surveyed acknowledged the existing and continuing stigma surrounding mental health among healthcare providers.
  5. Nearly 1 in 4 physicians reporting feeling concerned about the effects seeking treatment could have on various aspects of their career, including credentialing and licensures.
  6. Peer coaching could be one of the most effective ways to keep people in the healthcare industry, with 92 percent of those who underwent coaching reporting it made them more likely to stay in their current role.
  7. Ninety-seven percent of those who received peer coaching said they would recommend it to other healthcare professionals.
