Here are five numbers shedding light on the state of the healthcare job market that physicians should know:

1,630,000: The number of open healthcare industry jobs in May, according to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics Job Openings and Labor Turnover report, published July 2.

801,000: The number of hires in the healthcare labor force in May, according to the BLS report. 

77.6%: The percentage of physicians that are now employed by hospitals, health systems or corporate entities, according to an April report by the Physicians Advocacy Institute and Avalere.

39%: The percentage of physicians that have side jobs, according to a recent Medscape survey.

7.4: The overall score out of 10 the role of nurse practitioner received in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Health Care Jobs” ranking for 2024, making it the highest-rated occupation in healthcare. Working as a psychiatrist was the highest-rated physician specialty, earning a score of 5.6.
