4 steps hospitals can take to push their physician burnout efforts forward: AMA

While most hospitals recognize physician burnout is a serious problem, many are still in the early stages of addressing it. Here are four steps hospitals can take to push their programs addressing physician burnout further along, according to a July 18 report from the American Medical Association:

  1. Hospitals should have a solid framework and resources in place in order to begin addressing burnout.
  2. Hospitals should begin addressing burnout by measuring it to have a more thorough understanding of providers’ needs.
  3. Hospitals should take a comprehensive approach to addressing burnout, such as focusing on teamwork, peer work and updating electronic health record systems.
  4. Hospitals should designate a leader for provider and staff well-being that can push the hospital’s efforts to address burnout forward.
