10 stats to know on the employed physician workforce

Here are 10 stats on employed physicians based on data from the Physicians Foundation's "2023 Survey of America's Current and Future Physicians."

The results are based on data from 2,114 survey responses gathered from June 8-28.

  1. Twenty-three percent experienced a reduction in income in the past year.
  2. Twenty-six percent experienced an increase in income.
  3. Twenty percent cut back on work hours.
  4. Twenty-two percent moved to a new employment situation or practice.
  5. Fourteen percent said they had time to see more patients and assume more duties.
  6. Thirty-four percent said their workplace culture prioritizes the well-being of its physicians.
  7. Forty-two percent said they sought mental health support in the past year.
  8. Thirty-five percent said their hospital or practice explored or experienced being acquired by another practice or hospital over the past five years.
  9. Fifty-six percent said their hospital or practice explored or experienced acquiring another practice or hospital over the past five years.
  10. Twenty percent said their hospital or practice explored or experienced being funded by private equity over the past five years.
