The study, led by researchers from Boston-based Harvard Medical School, Stanford (Calif.) University and Pittsburgh-based UPMC pulled from data from the Healthcare Professional Well-being Academic Consortium survey.
The survey polled more than 18,000 physicians from 53 medical specialties between October 2019 and July 2021.
The study found that 32.6% of academic physicians who responded to the survey reported moderate or greater intention to leave the workforce, with anesthesiologists reporting the highest intention to leave at 46.8%.
Nuclear medicine academic physicians reported the lowest rate of intention to leave, at 13.6%. The study also found that rates of intention to leave were similar among male and female academic physicians, although those 60 and older were more likely to have higher intention to leave.
