Wisconsin is the best state for physicians. Here's why

Medscape named Wisconsin, which is home to 75 ASCs, as the best state for physicians to practice medicine in its "Best & Worst Places to Practice 2024" report, published May 30. 

According to the report, Wisconsin has the second lowest malpractice insurance premiums in the country, as well as the fewest malpractice filings in the last 10 years. The state also boasts among the highest physician pay in the country and a low cost of living. 

Additionally, most Wisconsin residents have health insurance, according to Medscape

This is the second year Medscape ranked Wisconsin as one of the top five states for physicians to practice and the first year it topped the list. 

According to WalletHub's 2024 ranking published March 18, Wisconsin is the seventh best state for physicians, analyzing 19 metrics, including average annual wage, number of hospitals per capita, quality of the state public health system and hospital safety grades.

Wisconsin ranked fifth in WalletHub's opportunity and competition rank and 18th in its medical environment rank.
