Bankrate’s study, published July 31, used public and private datasets to rank all 50 states based on metrics including affordability, overall well-being, cost and quality of healthcare, weather and crime.
Iowa ranked third in affordability, 11th in quality and cost of healthcare, 31st in overall well-being, 38th in weather and 12th in crime rates, leading to it being ranked the best state to retire in 2023 overall.
Alaska, the lowest-ranked state, earned the 43rd spot for affordability, 38th for quality and cost of healthcare, 27th for overall well-being, 50th for weather and 49th for crime rates.
