Washington, DC, physician charged for allegedly overprescribing opioids in exchange for cash

Washington, D.C., physician Ndubuisi Joseph Okafor, MD, was charged and arrested for alleged unlawful distribution of opioids in exchange for cash.

Dr. Okafor, 63, was arrested April 11 at his medical practice on 16 counts of illegal distribution of opioids, according to an April 12 news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia.

According to court documents, Dr. Okafor allegedly distributed oxycodone to individuals without a legitimate medical purpose out of his medical practice. He also allegedly solicited and received cash in exchange for opioid prescriptions inside his clinic's examination rooms.

The Drug Enforcement Administration Washington Division has served an immediate suspension order on Dr. Okafor's DEA registration because the administration determined he "posed an imminent danger to public health and safety due to the volume of unlawful distribution of opioids," the report said.
