Jana and Lara Baatenburg, both MDs, have opened a membership-based primary care practice in Grand Rapids, Mich., WZZM 13 reported March 18.
The physicians, who are twin sisters, opened Concierge Medicine of West Michigan in 2024. Insurance is not billed for visits and members pay a regular membership fee for unlimited appointments, 24/7 access to physicians and often same-day appointments. The physicians were previously employed by a traditional healthcare system in the state.
“We weren’t really able to practice medicine how we wanted to and we could see the frustrations that our patients had with the healthcare that they were receiving,” Dr. Lara Baatenburg told WZZM 13.
The pair emphasize their ability to communicate more directly and spend more time with patients as key reasons why they shifted to a practice model, outside the traditional insurance system.
