A plurality of general surgeons cite dealing with rules and regulations as the most difficult part of their jobs, according to Medscape’s 2024 “General Surgeon Compensation Report,” published May 24.

Here are the most challenging parts about being a general surgeon in 2024, according to the survey: 

Note: Four percent of respondents said there are no challenges with being a surgeon.

Having so many rules and regulations: 21%

Dealing with Medicare/other insurers and getting fair reimbursements: 17% 

Having to work long hours: 16%

Worrying about being sued: 14% 

Dealing with difficult patients: 13% 

Working with an EHR system: 9%

Other: 7% 

Dangers/risks associated with treating COVID-19 patients: 1%
