Prominent Johns Hopkins physician exits following misconduct allegations

Prominent pathologist Jonathan Epstein, MD, has resigned from Baltimore-based The Johns Hopkins Hospital amid misconduct allegations and being placed on administrative leave in May, The Washington Post reported Feb. 24.

Hospital spokesperson Liz Vandendriessche confirmed the resignation to Becker's but did not provide further details.

In October, Dr. Epstein, who served as the hospital's director of surgical pathology, was placed on leave for allegedly pressuring other physicians into giving second opinions that aligned with diagnoses made by his wife as well as accusations of intimidation and bullying. He resigned before the hospital determined whether those allegations were founded, according to the Post.

Dr. Epstein told the Post that the hospital found no evidence of misconduct. Ms. Vandendriessche told the Post that the assertion was false. Dr. Epstein also told the publication that Johns Hopkins officials did not find any areas of concern in regard to critical care in a legal document, but Ms. Vandendriessche did not confirm the authenticity of the statement.

Dr. Epstein told the Post he resigned because physicians who made alleged anonymous false allegations against him were still working there.
