Louisiana's 1st microhospital closing: 3 things to know

Microhospital Avail Hospital Lake Charles (La.) is permanently closing Sept. 29.

Here's what ASCs need to know:

1. As of Sept. 27, the hospital was already marked "permanently closed" on Google. No reason was given for its closure.

2. The 33,000-square-foot facility was Louisiana's first microhospital when it opened in 2017.

3. "We are disappointed to learn of the closure of Avail Hospital, but this closure speaks more of the viability of a for-profit hospital model than it does of the Lake Charles economy," Nic Hunter, the mayor of Lake Charles, told the newspaper. "Since its opening, Avail has operated as a for-profit entity, which is different from other local hospitals."
