The appointment is one of several changes that have been enacted as part of Gov. Jeff Landry’s overhaul of the health department. In June, Mr. Landry established the surgeon general’s office and appointed former Congressman Ralph Abraham, MD, a family medicine physician, as the state’s first surgeon general. The position replaced the former state health officer role.
Dr. Coleman, an ophthalmologist, is now listed as a member of the executive team on the health department website.
Dr. Coleman practices at the Willis-Knighton Physician Network, a group of about 400 physicians based in Shreveport, La. According to the report, Dr. Coleman is a longtime friend of Dr. Abraham.
