A urologist at Downers Grove, Ill.-based Duly Health and Care has become the first in Illinois to perform a bladder control procedure using Medtronic’s Altaviva implant.
Sarah Martin, DO, completed the procedure at DuPage Medical Group, part of Duly’s Chicagoland-based medical group, according to a Dec. 2 news release.
The 15-minute outpatient treatment targets urge urinary incontinence, a condition affecting more than 13% of women, by stimulating the tibial nerve through a small incision above the ankle to reduce urgency and leakage episodes. No sedation or imaging is required.
Clinical studies have shown that within one year, 80% of patients report symptom relief, 70% see improvements in quality of life and 61% experience a 50% or greater reduction in leakage episodes, according to the release.
