How healthcare billionaires built their fortunes

Here are five U.S. healthcare billionaires' current net worth and how they made their money:

Thomas Frist Jr., MD and family: $24.8 billion

Dr. Frist founded HCA Healthcare with his father in 1968. He owns more than 20% of the company with his family. 

Carl Cook: $10.1 billion

After his father's death in 2011, Mr. Cook became CEO of his parents' medical device manufacturer, Cook Group. Mr. Cook's parents started the business in 1963.

Reinhold Schmieding: $7 billion

In 1981, Reinhold Schmieding started Arthrex, an orthopedic surgical tools company, in Germany. He owns more than 90% of the company.

Ronda Stryker: $8 billion

Ronda Stryker is a director of Stryker, which was founded by her grandfather. She owns about 6% of the company.

Patrick Soon-Shiong, MD.: $5.8 billion

Dr. Soon-Shiong invented the cancer drug Abraxane. He sold his drug companies Abraxis in 2010 and American Pharmaceutical Partners in 2008 for a total of $9.1 billion.
