The best parts of being employed and self-employed, per physicians

Whether a physician is self-employed or is employed by a hospital or health system comes with advantages distinct to each, according to Medscape's 2022 "Employed Physicians Report" and its "Self-employed Physicians Report."

The reports surveyed more than 1,350 employed physicians and 740 self-employed physicians on aspects of their jobs, including income satisfaction and work-life balance.

Here are the employed physicians' favorite parts of their jobs, per the "Employed Physicians Report," ranked by popularity: 

1. Not having to run a small business. 

2. Having a stable income.

3. Having malpractice insurance paid for.

4. A better work-life balance.

5. The opportunity to work with large teams and staff.

6. Spending less time on rules and regulations.

1. Having autonomy.

2. Control over their own productivity.
